Ogg Vorbis is free, open, and unpatented and sounds at least as good as equivalent proprietary codecs such as MP3, AAC and WMA. While supported by all good software media players, hardware manufacturers have been slow to support the format but the situation is improving.

is the name of Xiph.org's container format for audio, video, and metadata.
is the name of a specific audio compression scheme that's designed to be contained in Ogg.
Note that other formats, such as FLAC, can be embedded in Ogg.
